In some cases, users of free ESXi found that BackupExec worked for backing up VMs, I think in ESXi 5.0, then at a later point these users applied one of the ESXi update patches sich as 5.1 Update, and suddenly Backup no longer worked in the free edition, because VMware added or changed technical measures that enforce license restrictions. My understanding not all versions of ESXi technically restrict the vStorage API as a licensed feature, so backup worked even with free edition in many versions the API may have been restricted "on paper", but not technically enforced, and some backup products may have hit restricted features, where others would still work. $500 for an Essentials kit is Negligible, if you are running this for a business.
